Puuuura Viidaaa!!

Dear all,

Sooo much happened this week I don't even know where to start! Maybe I will
begin with I take it back about what I said about all the delish fruit
drinks we have here. This week I had the privilege of drinking fresh
raddish juice, carrot juice, some green plant, and jello. Not my
favorites... haha but it's all part of the pura vida life and I love it.

Speaking of pura vida lifestyle, the parties have not stopped since I sent
my last email. They have gotten bigger, wilder, and crazier. They opened up
a fair, they have parades going all day long and classical music concerts
at night. People from all over Costa Rica have to Ciudad Colon to party!
They also have Zumba nights where the whole town comes out and does Zumba
in the park, it's awesome. I smile because it reminds me of my mommy :)

All this week I have been studying the Christ like attribute, HOPE. Because
I think I could use a little more of it. I always just throw it into the
same categoy as faith and call it good. But the truth is, hope is very
unique and different and equally important. Preach my gospel tells us that
hope means to trust in the Lord and his promises. So I decided to study it
out and realize what exactly are the promises the Lord has given me as a
missionary. And after reading D&C 31 I got my answer...

* 3 Lift up your heart and rejoice, for the hour of your mission is come;
and your tongue shall be loosed, and you shall declare glad tidings of
great joy unto this generation. 7 Yea, I will open the hearts of the
people, and they will receive you. And I will establish a church by your
hand; 13 Be faithful unto the end, and lo, I am with you. These words are
not of man nor of men, but of me, even Jesus Christ, your Redeemer, by the
will of the Father. Amen.*

So I learned that having hope doesn't just mean believing in Christ and
hoping that he might follow through with his promises to us. Its so much
more. Its knowing with assurance that he is there. That he lives. And that
he will give us his promised blessings because we are his servants. Then we
must act on that belief.

In the mission we have a goal to have 10 L.P.E.´s which stands for
lecciones para encontrar...or lessons to find. They consist of teaching a
principle, giving a committment, and asking for a reference. Well this week
with all the fiestas going on and my increased desire to have more hope we
ended up having 70 this week! And we saw soo many miracles. We also met
some very interesting people...

Felipe. An 11 year old boy who loved our message because he is crazy
inteligent and knows all about Jesus and the bible. He told us to come
visit him at his house and asked for all the pamplets so he could study
them all before we came! He then proudly told us he was name after an
apostle. So sweet.

We then got to talking with a mom and her 2 daughters who were super
interested! She gave me her number and then as she was walking away told me
it was actually her sons cell phone number, and that he really needs a
girlfriend........hahaha sorry sista can't help ya out there.

When we were in line for ice cream I started chatting with a man and told
him I was a representative of Christ. He then went on to tell me that he
already knows Christ personally and that they hang out on the weekends.
Well that's pretty cool.

We then met a happy grandma with her granddaughter in the park. And when I
asked for their address, I didn't understand a thing. So then I asked them
what color their house was hoping to get a little more details. At the same
time the grandma said "yellow" and the granddaughter said "pink". Obviously
the grandma didn't want a thing. Welp, maybe we will get lucky in finding
the yellow-pink house next week...

But we also saw lots of miracles this week as well :) we watched the
restoration video with a family we are teaching and the spirit was crazy
strong. NO ONE could deny it. We taught the plan of salvation to our
neighbors who lost a daughter and they all cried of happiness. I read
chapter 5 of Helaman and realized it is the best chapter of the Book of
mormon. After waking up with a migraine, I said a prayer and it afterwards
it instantly went away. We hiked up a mountain today and enjoyed the pure
beauty of Costa Rica. Miracles!!!

Hope you all have a happy, pura vida, miracle filled week :)

A whole lotta love!

Dear all,

I am soooooo happy because today I got my birthday package. Thanks a
million! I loved it all.

Since this week was Valentine's day I thought I would share with you guys
all the love that I experienced this week...

First of all, the Ticans LOVE to party.

Friday night was madness here in Ciudad Colon. Apparently Valentine's day is
pretty big here! Everyone was out partying in the streets, dancing,
listening to music, and playing in the park. And when we returned back to
our apartment at 9 we got to watch a firework show from our balcony. It was
the best!

Then on Sunday there was another huge party. People from all over Costa
Rica came to Ciudad Colon for the annual horse show. What's a horse show you
might ask? I wasn't really sure either but basically everyone dressed up
like cowboys. With hats, plaid shirts, boots and all! There was a bunch of
rides and blow up games with the food, music and dancing. And everyone
brought their horses! It was the strangest thing, but it looked like
everyone was having a blast. (moms Edit: She must have forgotten the world she knows back here in "Merica, for just about every summer, we went back to Wyoming and went to the county fair, which had horses, and cowboys, and food, and blow up games and rides, rodeos, music and dancing)

I LOVE ice cream.

So with all the fiestas goin on, the work has been a little rough. People
prefer their parties over the palabra de Dios...(word of God) but we did the best we
could and after 6 of our appointments fell through we decided to celebrate
the end of our Valentine's day with a little ice cream. Somehow that always
makes everything better :)

I LOVE Hermana Irma!

Hermana Irma is a divorced member of our ward with 4 children. After she
and her husband got a divorce, 2 elders knocked on her door and she was
later baptized. She knew that her husband needed to hear the gospel so she
sent missionaries to visit him as well. He was baptized as well. So
Saturday they got remarried and they are going to be sealed in the temple!
We got to go to her wedding and they were both so happy. Irma is such an
example to me and her faith is inspiring! We couldn't stay the whole time
because we had other appointments so we left before dinner and my comp was
way bummed. But Sunday they invited us over for lunch so Heavenly Father
blessed us for being obedient and diligent! None of their 4 kids are
members but we started chatting with her oldest son, who is married and we
are going to teach them this Wednesday! Soo exciting!

I love you all so much. I love being a missionary!
Love, Hermana Starke

Earthquakes, Pineapple and a little faith!!

Dear family,

Yes it's true. This week I experienced my frist Costa Rican earthquake. We
didn't feel the first one because we were walking home... but when we
kneeled down to pray and began planning at the end of the day we felt the
second one. All of a sudden the desk started wobbling and the floor starts
moving so I start freaking out. And screaming. Because let me remind you,
we live super high up in a little apartment. So the whole apartment starts
swaying and then I hear our neighbors laughing.

Guess earthquakes are really common here and the kids think they're fun.
Umm yeah...........no.

But don't worry, my faithful companion just kept on prayin!

Another problem about our apartment, we unfortunately haven't had water like
all week. So I have gone days without a shower or brushed teeth. Yeah, I
know. It's horrible. It's like camping hardcore, sister missionary style. It's
a good thing I don't have to worry about getting dates out here, right?

But even though we have little or no water out here, we have tons and TONS
of fruit. It just grows in the streets here basically. Every store, street
corner, and home is filled with fruit. And the best part is, they make the
yummiest drinks with it. This week some of my favorites were
rice/pineapple, melon/strawberry, and papaya/mango. They are so delicious
and fresh and I love that every house we visit feels the need to give us
something to drink. Fine by me!

This week I fell in love...........with the bible! Ha, gotcha. This week I
have been studying and learning so much from the old and new testament. It's
amazing. I love the epsitle of Paul to Philemon, one of his converts. He
writes...

* 4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,*

* 5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus,
and toward all saints;*

* 6 That the acommunication of thy faith may become beffectual by the
acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.*

So I decided that If I want more miracles, I need more faith. And if I want
more faith I must acknowledge every good thing which comes from Christ. So
this week I have started offering more prayers of gratitude to increase my
faith. Instead of asking for baptisms, I thank Heavenly Father for the
baptisms I am going to have! Instead of asking for the ability to know the
needs of my investigators I express my gratitude that I know Lord will
bless me with the words my investigators need to hear. It's been a really
cool experience for me and I have been able to increase my faith in Jesus
Christ, especially at the end of the day when I look back and realize how
much the Lord blessed me that day.

And this week, as always, we have seen lots of miracles!

Karen. An investigator that I love finally came to chruch this week. And
she loved it. Now we gotta get her married!

Reina. The mom of one of the strongest members we have here, came to church
as well. She isnt the biggest fan of Joseph Smith but hey, she came to
church!

Veronica. This beautiful, happy lady I met on the bus this week. She sells
nail polish so I called her and asked if I could come see it. Little did
she know we would end up teaching her and her family and leaving them all
with book of mormons... classic! Ok, ok, and I bought some purple nail
polish too :)

Samantha. A happy single mother that gladly accepted her baptismal date in
the first lesson. We later found out her mom is a less active and wants to
come back. Saaweet!

Jolie. A recent convert that reminds me of grandma Patsy. Rocks the
sunglasses and falls asleep all during church. We stop by and sing hymns to
her and she just loves it.

Daniela. A less active 15 year old. This week we helped her do some of her
personal progress and talked about the plan of Salvation. It was all pretty
new to her because she hasnt been to church in forever. This week her 30
year old cousin committed suicide. His wife was pregnant with twins.
Danilela called us crying saying how grateful she is for the plan of
salvation.

The Chacon family. A family of 5 who has been inactive for years because of
problems with members. Ive never visited them because everyone has always
told me they dont accept visits from members or missionaries. And if you
get lucky and they do let you in, you cant say anything about the church.
But this week Ive been praying for more faith. More miracles. So what did
we do? We visited them this week, expressed our love for them, shared our
testimonies and asked them how the joined the church.

Carol, the mom, was born into a family with the gospel because her parents
saved up their whole lives to journey to Salt Lake temple and be sealed. At
this time, it was the closet temple! They were so poor they had to take
their baby brother in a box. I guess the apostles still talk about and
share the story in conference! Her husband, Eduardo, was driving to his
baptism when his car broke down. He offered a prayer and said, Father, if
this is the right decision please bless me. Please help me get there. And
after the prayer he started up his car and was baptized later that day! A
year later, Carol and Eduardo were both sealed in the temple and they have
3 beautiful children. And guess what? All 5 of them came to church this
week and stayed the whole time. For the first time in years! Soo much
happiness.

I know these miracles may be small and simple but they are truly miracles!
This is the Lords work and He is truly over all. I feel a little bit like
Ammon when he said,

*Yea, I know that I am anothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I
will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his
strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have
wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.*

AMEN!!!

10 Months and LEGAL!!!!!

Hey fam bam,

Hermana Corales woke me up with a big giant hug today and reminded me that
today is Febuary 3 which means I, Hermana Starke, officially have 10 months
in the mish mish. Say whaaaat?! Feliz diez meses to me!

And, more exciting news, I finally recieved my "cedula" which means I have
this cool shiny card that says I am legal to be here. So after 10 months, I
am offically a TICA!

As for my compy comp she has about 3 week here now! And we are loving our
time together so much. It's pretty easy to tell she's a newbie because she is
covered in blisters and bug bites. Sound familiar? And the poor girl,
finally opened up to me and told me how she *really* felt the first day in
the mission. The food was different and weird, she wanted to throw up, and
while in the bathroom she dropped her nametag in the toilet. So maybe her
first day wasn't the best... but every day after that has been :)

We have crazy powerful lessons together and she is one of those people born
to be missionaries. One of the greats. Her faith is such an example to me
and I learn so much from her everyday.

She also is learning a few things from me too... For example, I told her
that even though the crocs here are way expensive they are totally worth
it. Not sure if she is totally convinced yet. But she will be come rainy
season! So today I bought me some new, comfy, purple crocs. ONLY a sister
serving in Costa Rica would get me. They are a new style and I LOVE THEM,
and I am laughing out loud as I write this. Dont hate on us croc lovers!
(Megan Starke)

I also had to break the bad news to her that there are no dry cleaners here
in Costa Rica... just hang it up and let the humidity do it's work!

Although real confused at first, she learned real quick that we sit by
strangers on the bus. We talk to people on the streets and at the check
out lines. We teach them about Joseph Smith and invite them to be baptized.
It's crazy. But what's even crazier, is when the people say yes!

This week our zone had a contest to see who could have the most lessons in
one day and whoever won, would get a giant cold Coke a Cola. The ticans
here are obsessed that stuff. And sorry mom, I am slowy coverting from
Pepsi to Coke. Hope ya still love me? {MOM INTURRUPTS THIS LETTER TO SAY, I SWING
 BOTH WAYS.... I LOVE THEM BOTH, GIVE ME PEPSI OR COKE, I DRINK IT ALL....PLEASE CONTINUE}
So at the end of the day we sent them a text messge telling them we like our Coke with Ice cream! Thats right,
the sistas in Ciudad Colon are rockin it. 12 lessons that day and 48 this
week! Now that I only have 8 months left, I cant just walk, I gotta run to
build the kingdom! The Lord is counting on me to find and feed his sheep!

Well, I love the work. I love my Savior. And I am grateful for every day and
the experiences it brings. Talk to you next week!
Hermana Starke

P.s. Sooo, funny story. When we walked in to Matha and Jan Carlos house
this week they were watching Duck Dynasty! I about died. Totally forget
that show even existed. Gosh dang it. Cant wait to get all caught up one
day haha. But Jan Carlos was just cracking up over the things they were
saying. That's why hes my favorite!
